When to use it

Triggered, not chosen

The subjunctive isn't a time — it's a mood. It shows up automatically after certain trigger phrases: wishes (ojalá, espero que), recommendations (es importante que), conjunctions that point to the future (cuando + future event, antes de que), and indirect commands (quiero que).

For GCSE, the most useful single rule is: "cuando + future event" needs the subjunctive. Cuando tenga dieciocho años, viajaré a Argentina ("When I'm 18, I'll travel to Argentina"). Learn that pattern plus ojalá and espero que, and you've got a top-mark sentence in every paragraph.

Model sentence

Cuando tenga dieciocho años, viajaré a Argentina.

When I'm 18, I'll travel to Argentina.

How to form it

The three-step recipe

Recipe

1Take the yo form of the present (e.g. hablo, como, tengo).
2Drop the final -o (habl-, com-, teng-).
3Add the opposite endings: -AR verbs take e-endings; -ER and -IR take a-endings.

-AR verbs

e.g. hablar — to speak

yohable
hables
él / ellahable
nosotroshablemos
vosotroshabléis
elloshablen

-ER verbs

e.g. comer — to eat

yocoma
comas
él / ellacoma
nosotroscomamos
vosotroscomáis
elloscoman

-IR verbs

e.g. vivir — to live

yoviva
vivas
él / ellaviva
nosotrosvivamos
vosotrosviváis
ellosvivan

"Opposite endings": -AR verbs end in -a in the regular present (habla), so they "swap" to -e (hable). -ER and -IR verbs end in -e (come, vive), so they swap to -a (coma, viva).

Irregular yo-forms carry through

If the present-tense "yo" is irregular, that irregular stem appears throughout the subjunctive.

tener tengo →tenga, tengas, tenga, tengamos, tengáis, tengan
hacer hago →haga, hagas, haga, hagamos, hagáis, hagan
decir digo →diga, digas, diga, digamos, digáis, digan
venir vengo →venga, vengas, venga, vengamos, vengáis, vengan
poner pongo →ponga, pongas, ponga, pongamos, pongáis, pongan
salir salgo →salga, salgas, salga, salgamos, salgáis, salgan
conocer conozco →conozca, conozcas, conozca, conozcamos, conozcáis, conozcan

Pure irregulars (don't follow the recipe)

A handful of high-frequency verbs are irregular in the subjunctive in their own right. Memorise these by sight.

ser to besea, seas, sea, seamos, seáis, sean
ir to govaya, vayas, vaya, vayamos, vayáis, vayan
saber to knowsepa, sepas, sepa, sepamos, sepáis, sepan
haber to havehaya, hayas, haya, hayamos, hayáis, hayan
dar to givedé, des, dé, demos, deis, den
estar to beesté, estés, esté, estemos, estéis, estén
ver to seevea, veas, vea, veamos, veáis, vean

Common mistakes

Using the regular present after a trigger

Once a trigger phrase appears, the next verb must be subjunctive. Cuando tengo 18 años, viajaréCuando tenga 18 años, viajaré.

Cuando + past / habit = no subjunctive

If cuando refers to a habit or a past event, you use the indicative. Cuando era pequeño, jugaba al fútbol (imperfect — habit, no subjunctive).

Yo-form irregulars carry through

If the regular "yo" is irregular (tengo, hago, salgo, conozco), the subjunctive uses that irregular stem. tenatenga.

Don't translate "want him to" word-by-word

"I want him to come" = quiero que venga, not quiero él venir. Use que + subjunctive after a verb of wanting.

Ojalá always triggers it

Whatever follows ojalá is subjunctive. Ojalá llueva, ojalá vengas, ojalá tengamos suerte.

Spelling changes — "u" after g

To keep the hard sound, pagar becomes pague, not page. Similarly jugarjuegue, llegarllegue.
